Duval Charter Scholars Academy Offers 21st Century Community Learning Center Program
Funded through the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, Duval Charter Scholars Academy offers an afterschool program for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Afterschool activities are designed to help students master state academic standards in reading, math, and science. To support these goals, daily homework help and intervention instruction are provided. Through the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) component, students participate in technology, math and science projects. Character development and leadership activities, college readiness, health and nutrition, art, and recreation are also included in the daily activities. Literacy Nights provide adult family members instruction in areas such as understanding the Florida State Standards, technology, financial literacy, and college planning and preparation.
Local partners supporting the 21st Century Scholars Afterschool program include Junior Achievement, University of North Florida, Baptist Medical Center, Vystar, and the local office of the National Parks Service.
The 21st Century Scholars Summer Academy starts June 12, 2017.
The summer schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., thorough July 21, 2017. Daily activities include summer bridge learning in English, Language Arts, Writing, Math, and Science. Students will also participate in technology and engineering project based learning, Enrichment classes include art, music, drama, and dance. Educational field trips are planned for Cummer Art Museum, the Museum of Science and History, and the University of North Florida. Breakfast, lunch, and snack, meeting USDA guidelines, will be provided to all participating students.
